Here’s a routine we use for stubborn pepper flaking, that’s what is usually left over in the pipes after using Ahh-Some a few times. It’s the only time we use chlorine (bleach). Although Ahh-Some Bio Cleaners are non toxic, environmentally safe, and green, the gunk and detritus spores that come out the jets and piping are NOT.

Let us take a slightly different cleaning approach for stubborn gunk with the following routine.

Tub filled with water 1” over jets (use hot water)

Add 1 teaspoon bio cleaner

Add 1 cup bleach (open window and DO NOT BREATH IN FUMES)
Run for 60 minutes (5 min on, 5 min off)

If the foam starts to diminish, add another teaspoon bio cleaner

After the initial 30 minutes add one more cup of bleach

After 60 minutes drain tub, clean, fill back up and run jets just with water for a few minutes

Add 1 teaspoon of bio cleaner

Run jets for 15 minutes (no bleach this time so you can close the window if it’s cold)

Leave the water in place over night if possible (no kids)

In the morning add 1 more teaspoon and run jets for 5-10 minutes

Drain tub, refill with fresh water (cold), drain and use the Jetted Tub later for relaxation and hydrotherapy

Notes: Bleach adds oxidation to the initial cleaning process, and vaporizes the smaller gunk as its pushed outward from the piping. The Bio Cleaner coagulates the gunk and places it on the tub sides for later cleaning. After you have the gunk under control, you will need to maintain it weekly and whenever you use additives to your water.

Water is not the same everywhere and what folks put into their bath water is not the same, and of course the grime and scum that comes off our bodies is
different as well. Just keep an open mind that the gunk and flaking is finite and will come to end but the pipes will always be working to build new bio film and future gunk in them, so clean it often and you will really enjoy your jetted tub.

For that $1.25 peace of mind … priceless.

Enjoy your Jetted Tub Again

We have a whirlpool bathtub in our bathroom. I diligently clean it with Scrubbing Bubbles and the Magic Eraser every week, but the jets always remain grimy. I’m a little skeeved out to use it because I fear what disgusting crap is going to shoot out of there when I turn it on. How can I clean this so that I can enjoy living in an apartment that actually has a bathtub built for a full-sized human being? In other words, how do I clean the jets so that I can spend whole Sunday afternoons in the bathtub sipping wine and reading books?

Answer:

You are absolutely right to be concerned about the vile filth those jets might be harboring. The great news is that there are products on the market designed to take care of even the gunkiest jacuzzi jets. The two most commonly found are Ahh-Some Hot Tub/Jetted Bath Bio & Gunk Cleaner and WHIRLOUT Jetted Bath Cleaner. I’m partial to the first one, Ahh-Some, because as I’ve mentioned before, I’m from Boston and mentally refer to that product as “Wicked Ahh-Some Gunk Cleanah.” But you have free will, pick whichever one you like and then follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

“Jolie Kerr is not paid to endorse any of the products mentioned in this column, but she sure would be very happy to accept any free samples the manufacturers care to send her way! Are you looking for a green alternative to the suggestions found here? Because we’ve got some! More importantly: Is anything you own dirty?”

King and his family stayed at the Stanley Hotel, in Estes Park, Colorado during the last night it was open for the winter, there was no other guests in the Stanley and because of King’s Celebrity status they let them stay the night. The Stanley Hotel was known for it’s haunting and with the isolation of being the only guests, King was able to use this experience in his book, “The Shining”.

Interestingly, the Stanley Hotel has a large number of jetted whirlpool paths in their guest rooms, particularly the mysterious room 217, where the King’s stayed. Ahh-Some was not around in the early 70′s but the dirty pipes and jets were. Today, 2011, the smart staff at the Stanley Hotel have been going through 36 ounces (six 6oz jars) of the Ahh-Some Jetted Tub Bio Cleaner every month that it is open for business. They are one of our best known and haunting customers using the Ahh-Some Bio Cleaner.

The “Shining” knows the truth since it has seen the past, and realizes Ahh-Some Bio Cleaners are the only way to effectively clean a Jetted Whirlpool tub where depend on bacteria free bathing and enjoyment away from home.

*** Other Methods Tried

We first went to a forum which suggested dish soap and bleach, so we did that four separate times, and that didn’t help.

Then my husband installed two whole-house filters (one on hot, one on cold) right before the faucet. That helped a little.

Then we bought some Whirlout at Home Depot, and that got some brown stuff out, but we still had as much coming out of the Jets afterwards as before.

Then I stuck a bottle brush into the jets and tried to clean them out, and my husband then removed the jets completely, cleaned then, and put them in the dishwasher. Neither of these things helped, even though we got some gunk out of them.

*** Ahh-Some Jetted Bath Bio & Gunk Cleaner (6oz) Results

When we put the Ahh-Some in, it immediately started getting out gunk that we had never seen before: black flacks and also a lot more of the light brown stuff. My tub must be really bad though because when I tried to take a bath after that, I still had more of the mucus-like stuff. So we ran the Ahh-Some again, this time for longer than the directions suggest. Again, more black and brown gunk came out. Afterward, when I tried to take a bath, it I still had the brown stuff, but a lot less. So we ran the Ahh-Some a third time, this time for over an hour. (I was determined to use this tub!)

Finally, I tried again to take a bath, and this time there was no gunk; however I had the jets on low. The other times I had them on high. I haven’t tested it again with them on high, but I will. If there is more gunk, I will just run the Ahh-Some again. I am confident that it will get it all out, if it hasn’t already.

*** Conclusion

I believe that this product works on most tubs with one application, but we actually bought this tub in 2003 and didn’t install it until 2010. Jacuzzi tests their tubs, and they don’t get all the water out of the pipes, and it just sits there. Whatever bacteria and solids that were in their water has been sitting in my pipes for seven years. Then I didn’t know that I had to use special soap, and I used soap with oil in it with the jets on. DON’T USE OILY SOAP IN YOUR JACUZZI! Check the label!

It does say on the Ahh-Some label that particularly dirty tubs might require more than one application, and mine certainly did. I do recommend this product–it is the only thing that works that has finally allowed me to use my bathtub. However, be aware that if you have a problem tub (which I can see by reviews of the other sizes of this product) is rare, that you might have to repeat the first application more than once or twice.

*** Update — Problem Tub Figured Out

We finally figured out the main reason behind the brown water (not the worst of it at first, but the overall brown color). We are on a well, and our water softener was not working at the time. Although we had the filters coming into the tub, they did not filter out the hard water (heavy metals and such). Once we got the water softener working again and the initial really nasty stuff out of the tub, it has been just fine. I don’t think I would have ever been able to use my tub without the Ahh-Some though. I would have never gotten the initial gunk out of it. Now I use it after about every seven baths, and I have sparkling clear water.

Ahh-Some® Washing Machine Bio Cleaner & Deodorizer Gel

Washing Machines Grow Harmful Bio Film Too

Just like your bathtub, especially jetted tub piping, washing machines leave soap scum, dirt, detergent residue buildup that breeds mold, mildew and bacteria and over time will start to create a bad, foul odor in your laundry room. HE washers are built to save water, energy and have air tight seals which create higher potential for the noxious mildew odors.

The Ahh-Some Washing Machine Bio Cleaner & Deodorizer is a dual-purpose bio cleaning product that is specifically design to eradicate and rid HE front and top loading washing machines mildew, bacteria, gunk and other mold type organisms. It also removes the bad odors caused by mold and mildew. When used weekly, just a 1 teaspoon of the bio cleaning gel will keep your washing machine and laundry area clean of nasty odors.

Ahh-Some Bio Cleaners at Work

The Ahh-Some Bio Cleaner is one of the proven washing machine cleaners that penetrates, dissolves, scrapes off, and gets rid of the odor causing residue harboring on the internal walls of the washing machine. Ahh-Some uses the force of the washing cycle to scrape places you cannot get to like the tub, hoses and pumps. The gunk and detritus is then sent down the drain. By taking an 8 ounce spray bottle filled with water and 1 teaspoon of the Ahh-Some Bio Cleaner, you can then spray the areas around the latches, doors and rubber seals, finishing by wiping with a cloth. (Spray bottle not included)

Washing Machine Bio Cleaning Instructions:

Remove any clothing in the washing machine to be cleaned

Add 1 level teaspoon, no more, into your washing machine, see individual washing machine manufacturer’s instructions for adding detergent.

Add 2 tablespoon of bleach

Run a “Normal” or “Clean” wash cycle, selecting hot water.

The Ahh-Some Washing Machine Bio Cleaner & Deodorizer is a very concentrated gel. Too much gel will foam too much, so only use a level teaspoon at any cleaning. In a matter of minutes you will see a brown and black fleck film appearing on the surface. This is the gunk we are cleaning from your enclosed system. This is Good!

HE Washers Helpful Information

The fantastic features that make HE washers more efficient are also the cause of the excessive odor from mildew and mold buildup.

Wash cycles require less water so there is dirt and detergent left in the tub

HE washers are excellent cold water cleaners but dirt and grease are less likely to dissolve and cling to the tub sides

When the door is closed there is an air tight seal promoting and if still wet, will promote mildew and mold buildup quicker

This particular one, cleaning jetted tubs, happens to be the anchor of Ahh-Some, since there are millions of Jacuzzi, Whirlpool and other jetted tubs that desperately in need of a cleaning with a powerful and proven jetted tub cleaner. Don’t feel bad for not finding Ahh-Some earlier but … there are too many folks out there promoting dishwasher detergent and vinegar, not to mention, the end all cleaner, bleach. These cleaners are very good at what they do for what they were made for; vinegar (cooking, salads), Cascade (dishes, glasses), Chlorox (oxidizing bacteria). Bleach is the only cleaning product that actually helps sanitize your filthy jetted tub … although I would advise opening a window when doing so.

The Ahh-Some Bio Cleaners are on the base side of the pH scale (water quality) and work very well with bleach, reducing and eventually “not using” bleach to clean your jetted tub. Ahh-Some coagulates, bleach vaporizes contaminants in water. Ahh-Some needs a filter (or tub siding), bleach needs microscopic particles. What about the gunk on the side of the walls in the 30+ foot of piping wrapped around your jetted tub? Bleach will not rid the pipes of the gunk! period!, but it will sanitize as much as it can.

The Ahh-Some Bio Cleaners for Jetted Tubs and Hot Tubs was made to clear the pipe and jet passages of all gunk and deposit it on the outside of the vessels. Guess what? Ahh-Some actually does what it is supposed to do … oh and so does bleach (bleach just leaves the remnants of what it oxidized in the piping). We claim and so do I, that the Ahh-Some Bio Cleaner will scrape the walls of your hot tub and Jacuzzi jetted tub clean of bio-film, gunk, algae, mold, and anything else that wants to live in the catacombs of those pipes.

We are the primary distributor for all the Ahh-Some Bio Cleaners which consist of:

Ahh-Some is your most cost effective cleaning product for jetted tubs.

It’s common sense not to waste money on marketing schemes that make you buy large amounts of cleaning solutions because the only way its going to work is if you use A LOT OF IT. This is what the manufacturers of WhirlOut, a jetted tub cleaner, don’t tell you. Whirlout is also a caustic cleaner and you will more than likely need to open a window up. You need to buy six (6) 21 oz containers of Whirlout to equal the amount of cleaning applications (12) that you get with one 2 oz jar of the Ahh-Some Jetted Bath Bio Cleaner. You need to spend more than two times more for Whirlout, approximately $42.00 (price fluctuations) compared to the retail price of $19.95 for the Ahh-Some Bio Cleaner. That’s 6 containers to one little jar.

Many Ahh-Some customers have switched rather quickly from Whirlout because it simply does not do what you need it to do, that is, clean out your jetted tub pipes and jets. Yes, it may be easier to purchase Whirlout in a store, but we are working on changing that paradigm as well. Contact your local Ace Hardware or Home Depot and ask for it by name.

Even though we state 12 cleaning applications for the Ahh-Some Bio Cleaner, you will only need to use 1/2 teaspoon weekly when you have the pipe and jet cleaning under control. This will make your Ahh-Some investment of a cleaning your jetted tub even easier to digest.

There are only a few jetted tub, whirlpool, and Jacuzzi cleaners on the market today. None are from the manufacturers of these type of tubs and the misconception that bleach is the end all of their maintenance it ridiculous. Bleach kills bacteria and leaves its remnants behind to show up as flaking a month or two later. The Ahh-Some Bio Cleaner for jetted tubs was created to scour and scrape the walls of the pipes and jets and to bring out the gunk that the bio cleaner has eradicated in its process.

Waste your money on Whirlout or save you money with Ahh-Some. We look after our customers and believe in not misleading them.
